About Tanzania
Located on the Southeastern African coast and full of some of the most diverse and beautiful natural environments, Tanzania is ranked 164 out of 173 countries in the  Human Development Index and 226 out of 232 countries in GDP per capita.  Over 60% of Tanzanians live on less than $2 a day. In this context, education suffers. Only 6% of Tanzanian students reach secondary school, one of the worst rates in the world.  And the government spends only about half of what other Sub-Saharan countries spend on education.

About Mt Kilimanjaro
Located on the border of Tanzania and Kenya, Mt Kilimanjaro is the world’s tallest free-standing mountain and the tallest peak in Africa.  One of the “Seven Summits” (the 7 highest peaks on the 7 continents), Mt Kilimanjaro is renowned for its beauty, grandeur, and the fact it is the only of the ‘Seven Summits” that can be reached by non-technical climbers. At 19,341 ft (5,895 meters) Mt. Kilimanjaro rises high above the African plain and represents the past glory and the promise of the future for all Tanzanians.

The Organization: My World

My World is a Boston, USA based
non-governmental organization founded by three former American Peace Corp Volunteers who served in Tanzania between 2001 and 2004.  My World enriches the lives of students in the poorest areas of the world and promotes a more just world by sending  them on educational expeditions to explore the natural and cultural wonders of their own countries and by providing them with scholarships for continuing education.
My World works will local Tanzanian communities and schools to design and coordinate these trips, and has successfully led guided expeditions through The Serengeti and up
Mt. Kilmanjaro since 2004.

Rotary Clubs From 10 Countries Partner To
Take 10 Students To The Top of Their World.
A Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from Iowa with the help of the Boston-based NGO My World, Inc. have joined together 18 Rotary Clubs for 10 countries to take 10 students to the top of Africa’s tallest mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and make a documentary that captures this life changing experience on film!

Born of a connection between a group of Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars in Hong Kong and Peace Corp Volunteers in Africa, this trek will set out December 19th, 2007 and will take 10 students from rural Tanzania, and their teachers, on a fully guided, six-day educational trek up
Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.

Organized by My World, Inc, a Boston-based nonprofit, non-governmental organization (NGO), who specializes in planning such treks, and run by a fully-licensed trekking agency, this experiential learning adventure will help these students improve their self esteem, teamwork, creativity, environmental awareness, and leadership skills, in a country with one of the world’s lowest GDP’s and least developed education systems.  This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the students to see this natural wonder of their own country, that might only come to them again if they serve as guides or porters for foreign tourists.

Along the way, the Tanzanian students will be joined by a filmmaking team from the US and Hong Kong who will be shooting a documentary of the students’ experience.

In an effort to showcase the international network of support that Rotarians provide to Africa and the world, we have sought Rotary Clubs (or individual Rotarians) from countries around the world to each contribute $200 USD (or more), which makes it possible for these students to hike to the top of their world.  As we are aware that each Rotary Club faces different economic realities, we welcome contributions of less than $200 USD from clubs in less wealthy countries, as we are more interested in geographically diverse support than large scale contributions.

Contribution still being accepted.
Though we have raised enough funds to ”green-light” this project, we are still accepting contributions from Rotary-affiliated clubs and Rotarians worldwide.  The additional funds will help support the filmmaking and post productions costs of the film and post-trek events to publicize this project.
